Mail for Ventura finally adds three features that have been available for other email clients for a longer time:
- It's possible to schedule sending emails (Send Later).
- I can set myself a reminder for a specific email (Remind Me).
- I can undo sending an email (Undo Send).
Let's have a look at how those new features work.
Send Later
When I want to send an email there now a new dropdown with different options:
Clicking on Send Later... gives me a new window for date/time options:
That's not badly done. However, who does the layout of those windows? It looks like it was done by an absolute amateur. The left, top and right borders are different from the bottom one. After clicking on the Schedule button the email is scheduled and then sent at the correct time:
The feature has been implemented well except for the weird layout of the detail window.
Remind Me
Let me add a reminder for a test email. Opening the context menu gives me a new entry "Remind Me" with some options:
Clicking on "Remind Me Later..." gives me a similar detail window with the same odd borders like for the Send Later feature:
There is now a new top folder for the Reminders and I can edit the reminders if I want:
And finally I got the reminder notification with the subject in the notification:
This feature has several problems:
- I didn't find a way to remove the reminder.
- When having multiple reminders it's not visible which email is set to which date at a glance.
Undo Send
This has happened to everyone: you send an email and then notice an embarrassing typo. Undo Send is supposed to help with this problem. Emails are not sent immediately. But only after 10 seconds.
When sending an email it looks like the email is sent and the usual sound is done. However, the app waits for 10 seconds and during that time it's possible to click on the Undo Send button. The button, however, was so bad to see that I had to ask on a forum to find it. The button is small and the only feature making it a button is the blue color:
There is nothing to configure. I usually wait until the email is sent. Then I can see if it bounces. Now I have to wait extra 10 seconds. Not a good implementation.
Verdict
It's good to see at least some new features in Mail. But none of the features are really new - only for Mail. Gmail has Send Later and Undo Send.
Send Later is easy to use.
With the MailTags plugin emails can have a Tickle Date which works similar to Remind Me. If emails are used as a To Do list I would like to see a calendar view which email is set to which time. Or I can do a calendar entry with the email so that I have more control. As the Remind Me is now implemented I would use this for a couple of emails only.
I really really don't like Undo Send. Every time I send an email I have to wait extra 10 seconds. I would like to see a configuration with the delay and the ability to disable the feature completely.
