In Finder some files and folders are invisible. Sometimes I need to view those.

Starting with Sierra it's very easy to show the invisible stuff.

In Finder do a 

Cmd-Shift-.


My user folder without invisible files:

The same folder with invisible files:

Folder with invisible files

If you use El Captian or older you can use a Terminal command or the application Onyx .

Here is how you show the invisible files in Onyx:

After changing the checkbox Onyx will restart the Finder for you.

Doing the same with Terminal is a bit more complex:

  1. Open the Terminal application from Applications -> Utilities
  2. Paste the following into Terminal:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles YES
  3. Press return
  4. Restart the Finder application
